San Diego Youth and Junior December F1 Triathlon - So Cal Championship

Introducing the biggest youth and junior triathlon race in the US in the winter! This is the 1st annual San Diego Youth and Junior December Triathlon - So Cal Championship! This event will take place at Fiesta Island in San Diego, on Friday, December 30th, and has two races:

- F1 draft-legal triathlon for kids 12-19, consisting of a 600 meter swim, 16K bike, and a 4K run.

The course maps: (click on images to enlarge)

There will be prizes for the top 3 in the following divisions:
- Youth 8-11, 12-15 years of age
- Youth F1 12-15 years of age
- Junior F1 16-19 years of age

The race day schedule will be:
Friday, December 30th, 2011

6:00 AM - Packet pick-up opens
6:45 AM - Pre-Race Meeting MANDATORY
7:30 AM - F1 Race starts (boys and girls together, Youth and Juniors)
8:15 AM - Youth race begins, (non-drafting, shorter)
9:00 AM - Awards

What is an F1 race?
It is a competitive, draft-legal format of triathlon racing. This is the type of racing that TriJuniors focuses on.

Why race on a Friday morning?
Holiday weekends can not be used to permit Fiesta Island, and this is the one time of year when pretty much everyone, (parents and kids), have time off, since it is between Christmas and New Years. We think this will make the event well attended, and give many athletes a great jump-start on the 2012 season!

We don't live in Southern California, can we still participate if we come out?
Absolutely! We are just calling the So Cal Championships, since that is where the race is located.

My son/daughter is not very competitive, what race should they do?
If your child is between 8 and 15 years of age, they can do the Youth Non-Drafting race event. This is a shorter, fun based event. If they are over 15, then the only race they can do is the F1.

How is the age of the athlete determined?
Based upon USAT rules, it is the age of the athlete as of December 31st, (the next day).

My son/daughter has never done a triathlon, but they are interested in this race, but are too old for the shorter, youth race, should they enter the F1?
Yes! This will be a great experience, and we can help your child race the event, with a proper bike, equipment, etc. Contact the race coordinator, Jim Vance at coachjimvance@gmail.com. We also have a triathlon camp the two days before for youth and juniors!

Is there a race expo and packet pick-up the day before?
No, there is only packet pick-up on race morning. This keeps the event condensed and easier to manage for all.

Will this race be wetsuit legal?
The temperature of Mission Bay in December is a bit chilly, so expect the race to be wetsuit legal.

Will this race qualify me for anything?
Not anything in particular, but this will be the biggest youth/junior race in the country in the winter months. It is the perfect opportunity for athletes to prepare for the upcoming season, especially those who want to prep for the Elite Cups, PATCO, and USAT Junior Nationals and the Junior World Championships.

TriJuniors at the Olympic Training Center

This past weekend, we took 11 of our TriJuniors athletes to the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, to get some excellent bike practice on the closed criterium course. This 1 km, technical course is entirely closed off from cars, and allows the athletes to work on turning, shifting, pace-lines, pack riding, and even brick intervals with a T1/bike/T2/run, without any outside dangers. Needless to say, the kids had a great time, and are looking forward to our other 5 sessions at the center. Below are some photos from the day.

If you're interested in joining our program, and training at the Olympic Training Center with us, please feel free to contact us!

F1 Series in San Diego in 2011!

TriJuniors is proud to sponsor in conjunction with the Triathlon Club of San Diego, a draft-legal race series at Fiesta Island, called F1. The races will take place on March 20th, April 3rd, and May 15th.

The races are a 2-lap, 300 meter swim, followed by a draft-legal 3-lap, 12K bike, to a 2-lap, 2K run.

Interested athletes can get more information at:

You do NOT have to be a Triathlon Club of San Diego member, NOR a member of TriJuniors to participate.
